The Differential

How does a differential work?

The discussion of what a differential is has come up. Here is a great old film explaning the operation in a very practical, understandable manner. 9 minutes very well spent. The first 2 minutes may not make sense, but give it time.

2013-01-07 Surface Wear, a photo by jcurtis4082 on Flickr.

I finally got around to photographing this example of wear on a swash plate of a piston hydraulic pump that Keith brought in.

This type of wear is indicative system failure. This metal will show up in the hydraulic filter(s) and cutting them open is a valuable troubleshooting tool.
