A little maintenance on the ferry engine. Note that this boat is probably still working on the other 3 engines and hauling cars at this point.

Would you use this?
Cummins re-usability guidelines do not allow for use of crankshafts damaged in the radius area of the bearing journals.
For size reference, the hole to the right of the photo is about 1/4" in diameter.

Massimo Sestini 3
If you have followed the news the past few days you have seen the images of the Costa Concordia sinking off the coast of Italy. There are plenty of photos of the whole ship, but here is an interesting photo of the hole.
What do you suppose that the cruise industry and specifically the Costa line will learn from this grounding/sinking?
On another subject, I learned to remember that fluids can damage engine parts. I spilled coolant on my serpentine belt and did not rinse it off. It squeaked; badly. A $50 belt repaired it. ):

"That" Talk...
This hasn't come up yet, and I don't expect it to. But, keep in mind that your "Blog" is not the place post personal attacks, snide, derogatory comments, political views, or, publicly talk about others, employers, internship sites, shop owners nor fellow students and of course instructors.
Take the high road and keep your blog professional.

Photo History
If I just were to write about my experiences in Alaska, they may not have the impact that a photo does.
In 1984 my employer, City Electric Inc., of Fairbanks was contracted to build a power line from Healy, AK to Denali National Park. It seems to me the total distance was about 25 miles. The kicker was that there was no road and most of the work was done by hand or helicopter.
I fabricated this device hanging under the chopper to string in the conductor. Click on the photo to learn some of the details.

I fabricated this to lay the 3 phase power line into Denali National Park from Healy Alaska in 1984. The tether runs up to the helicopter and the brake control hose takes off (see coil) to the rear door. An operator operated a standard master cylinder in the chopper that controlled a disc brake setup I salvaged from a wrecked Ford E-250 van.
The first unit was made in Seattle and the brake did not function correctly. It landed in a heap after being punched loose by the pilot on a Friday afternoon after the conductor was "birdsnesting" out of control. A crew of 3 of us re-built it over the weekend and it was operational on Monday morning.
I was the master mechanic for City Electric Inc out of Fairbanks at this time. The chopper was owned by Trans-Alaska Helecopters (A CEI company at the time).
Cummins "C" Engine Injector Lines
Today Raul and Ian started on a "basket case". This engine was not completed last spring because of lack of parts.
They have already been documenting their work and taking pictures to add to their blogs. This will show the process from the beginning and the steps that they will have to take to complete the project.
Raul showed me how he can add to his Blogger blog from his smartphone, so he is already getting started.
How are you coming along on your blog?

Which Tool to Choose
The blog will be a place of your own to store your daily report. The daily report is something that is a requirement in most all places of employment to track what you have done. Use the blog to insert photos, videos or audio examples of your work, your learning and your reflections of your learning. This is where you will need to keep a running log or total of time indicating hours worked towards your internship each week.
