  1. Hey jeff.i found that easy to believe..with pollution concerns, new gas vehicles with their fuel economy, and the advances made in diesel technology that make diesel engines acceptable to a large market of consumers, that would not have even remotely considered owning a diesel car or light truck 10 years ago..Such as yours truly..

  2. I'm all for it. Diesel is far more efficient than gasoline all though it's more reliant on engine heat so it's not so great for short trips to town. It can be hard on diesel engines if they never get a chance to warm up. I do think it's kind of a shame to make diesel engines so quiet.

  3. Hmmm, 47 miles to the gallon by 2040? I know a few folks with Diesel Jettas, Jeep Liberties and even one with a retrofit Diesel Wrangler who are beating that now. I really wish there were more vehicles available with diesel motors, if I could put one in my Wrangler at an affordable cost i would in a heartbeat. I think they have already proven that diesel motors can burn clean, create more power and go longer between fill ups. And we all know they will last FOREVER! haha.

My first experience with the turbocharged diesel Jetta was eye opening to say the least. I couldn't hear it, couldn't smell it and was in disbelief that it actually was a diesel. Then I drove it and could swear it was a sports car based on the vehicles performance. My thoughts are this, Go Diesel because it works!

  4. Diesel surpassing gas is inevitable, and I sincerely hope that this happens sooner than later. Europe certainly didn't receive the bad rap on diesel engines the same way that the American public did. Cars like the Cadillac Fleetwood barely started, and clanged and clunked. Even my old '92 Jetta smelled something fierce.
As companies like the Volkswagen Auto Group (I know Jeff, I know...) bring more of their European diesel cars overseas and get them up to our ridiculously high EPA standards, diesel engines will become more mainstream and 'hip'. Also, while the price at the pump increases faster than we can afford, it takes only the most ignorant person to think that gasoline is the more affordable option. This savings per gallon will undoubtedly cause more and more people in the states to start viewing diesel as the way to go.
It will be interesting to see what actually happens in 2040, but that is a long ways off in terms of how fast technology snowballs in development.

  5. I am not surprised one bit. I have done a couple assignments comparing gasoline and diesel in the past and diesel always takes the cake. My 82 1.6L diesel Jetta gets 45 or so miles to the gallon and it has almost a half a million miles on it and way out of tune. I am looking forward to seeing the new technological break throughs in the future. Great article.
