M/V Tokitae superstructure placement time lapse

Here is modern shipbuilding happening in our state.

Why do you think they build in this manner?

What are the pros/cons?

  1. Looks as if the top half was brought in on a barge? My thoughts are that they build this way to speed up the building process, allowing separate crews to build the hull at the same time the upper is being manufactured. Looks like they are dialed in on mating the two sections! I would say that a definite pro is the cut in building time of the vessel. Cons I think would be having two manufacturing locations and possible labor costs employing enough people to complete two builds at the same time, this assuming that it’s the same company doing the build. Then again, labor costs may not be a factor if they are able to produce more products per year doing it this way. Cool video.
